What Can Make Ingrown Toenails More Likely?

An ingrown toenail occurs when the edges of the nail grow into the surrounding skin rather than over it. This can happen on any of the toes, but most frequently affects the big toe. Certain factors can make someone more likely to develop ingrown toenails. Wearing shoes that are too tight in the toe area can cause the toes to be compressed and can put excess pressure on the nail, pushing it against the skin. Trimming the toenails in a rounded shape or too short can also cause ingrown toenails. Excessive sweating in the feet can make the skin of the nail folds so soft that the nail easily pokes into it. Other factors that may make ingrown toenails more likely include a history of nail infections, having nail shape or structure abnormalities, and having a genetic predisposition to ingrown nails. For more information about how to care for your toenails and prevent ingrown nails, please consult with a podiatrist.

Ingrown toenails can become painful if they are not treated properly. For more information about ingrown toenails, contact one of the podiatrists of JE Foot & Ankle Associates. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails occur when a toenail grows sideways into the bed of the nail, causing pain, swelling, and possibly infection.

Causes

  • Bacterial infections
  • Improper nail cutting such as cutting it too short or not straight across
  • Trauma to the toe, such as stubbing, which causes the nail to grow back irregularly
  • Ill-fitting shoes that bunch the toes too close together
  • Genetic predisposition

Prevention

Because ingrown toenails are not something found outside of shoe-wearing cultures, going barefoot as often as possible will decrease the likeliness of developing ingrown toenails. Wearing proper fitting shoes and using proper cutting techniques will also help decrease your risk of developing ingrown toenails.

Treatment

Ingrown toenails are a very treatable foot condition. In minor cases, soaking the affected area in salt or antibacterial soaps will not only help with the ingrown nail itself, but also help prevent any infections from occurring. In more severe cases, surgery is an option. In either case, speaking to your podiatrist about this condition will help you get a better understanding of specific treatment options that are right for you.

Positive Changes

Negative heeled shoe – Choosing this shoe type places the heel slightly lower than the ball of the foot. These are great for overall foot health. Find shoes that fit you correctly.

Go barefoot – Our feet were not designed to be enclosed for all hours of the day. Try to periodically expose your feet to air.

Eliminate Pain

Foot Exercises – Performing simple exercises, incorporating yoga and doing stretches are beneficial. This will allow increased blood flow to the area and muscles of the foot.

Achilles tendon – Stretching the foot out flat on the floor will relax the calf muscles and tendon. These exercises can be performed almost anywhere. Make sure you add these exercises to your daily regimen.

Managing Pain From an Ankle Sprain

Ankle sprains are common injuries in which the ligaments of the ankle are overstretched or torn due to trauma. The symptoms of an ankle sprain may include pain, soreness, swelling, bruising, difficulty walking, and stiffness in the ankle joint. Although an ankle sprain can be painful at the time of injury, the pain tends to lessen within a couple of weeks. Conservative treatments such as resting, icing, compressing, and elevating the affected ankle and taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications are typically effective for managing the pain from an ankle sprain. If you have injured your ankle, it is suggested that you seek the care of a podiatrist.

Although ankle sprains are common, they aren’t always minor injuries. If you need your ankle injury looked at, contact one of the podiatrists from JE Foot & Ankle Associates. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

  • Bruising/Swelling
  • Ankle area is tender to touch
  • In severe cases, may hear/feel something tear

Treatment of a Sprain

In many cases, the RICE method (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevate) is used to treat ankle sprains. However, you should see a podiatrist to see which treatment option would work best with your injury. In severe cases, surgery may be required.

Your Gait and Running Shoes

With the variety of running shoes available on the market, finding the right shoes for you can seem like a daunting task. When shopping for running shoes, your gait, or the way that your feet move when they hit the ground running or walking, can help determine what type of running shoes may be best for you. Those with an overpronated gait, in which the feet roll inward as you run or walk, may benefit from running in stability shoes which can help correct the gait. Those with a neutral gait may not need stability shoes and want to opt for shoes with adequate cushioning. A podiatrist can help you determine what your gait pattern is so that you can find the best running shoes for you.

If you are a runner, wearing the right running shoe is essential. For more information, contact one of the podiatrists from JE Foot & Ankle Associates. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Choosing the Right Running Shoe for Your Foot Type

To increase performance and avoid the risk of injury, it is important to choose the right running shoe based on your foot type. The general design of running shoes revolves around pronation, which is how the ankle rolls from outside to inside when the foot strikes the ground.

  • Neutral runners are able to choose from a wide variety of shoes, including minimalist shoes or even going barefoot.
  • Runners who overpronate, or experience an over-abundance of ankle rolling, should choose shoes that provide extra motion control and stability.
  • Runners who underpronate, or supinate, have feet that have high arches and lack flexibility, preventing shock absorption. They require shoes with more flexibility and cushion.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact one of our offices located in Fleming Island and Palm Coast, FL . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.
